Comments on a decision that, while based on Treaty 3, is assumed its application will apply to other numbered treaties in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.

Describes the case of Jeannette Corbiere Lavell, of the Wikwimekong First Nation on Manitoulin Island, and her appeal to the Federal Court of Canada to retain status under the Indian Act.

Discusses the enfranchisement of eastern First Nations by Macdonald’s Electoral Franchise Act in 1885, the participation of Indigenous voters in the Brant South and Haldimand ridings in elections between 1886 and 1897, and their disenfranchisement when the Electoral Franchise Act was repealed by Laurier’s government. Also considers conflicting perspectives on enfranchisement within the First Nations community.

Speaker discusses the significance of the chain and the meaning of the wampum belts which were exchanged between British and First Nations, and argues that treaty-making is a relational process and not a single event. Duration: 1:18:08.

Study of 16 Aboriginal scholars currently or formerly employed as professors in Ontario; examines the under-representation of Indigenous scholars in the academy and especially in regard to retention. Findings illustrate the need for employment equity policy which addresses issues of recruitment and the valuation of Indigenous scholarship.
