Data collected from 15 study participants living in three different communities indicates a hierarchy of barriers with the barrier of geography appearing to be the first and most difficult to overcome. Subsequent barriers include cost, perceived quality of care, trust of medical provider and available time.

Qualitative interview study which engages 22 non-Indigenous Canadians from one city, explores how knowledgeable and how engaged participants are about the issues surrounding drinking water in Indigenous communities. Found that most participants had minimal understanding of the issue and faced barriers to engagement including racism and a lack of resources, capacity, and personal responsibility.

Historical note:

Fort Battleford, built in 1876 and in use until 1924, was the sixth Northwest Mounted Police fort to be established in the Northwest Territories of Canada, and played a central role in the events of the Northwest Resistance of 1885.
