Historical note:

James Morrow Walsh (22 May 1840 - 25 July 1905) was a North West Mounted Police (NWMP) officer and the first Commissioner of the Yukon Territory. Born in Prescott, Ontario, James Walsh was one of the original officers of the NWMP.

Typescript of biography of P.G. Laurie, publisher of the Saskatchewan Herald newspaper, the oldest newspaper in Saskatchewan established in 1878. Source unknown.

Historical note:

Patrick Gammie Laurie (b. 1833 - d. 1903) arrived in Fort Garry, MB in 1869 and took charge of the "Nor'Wester" newspaper, which reported on the Red River Resistance. In 1878 he left for Battleford, SK where he established the Herald. He remained there until his death in 1903. During the Rebellion of 1885 he alternated between military duties and the publication of his paper.

A photocopy of a letter sent by Indian agent Thomas Quinn of Frog Lake to farm instructor George G. Mann of Onion Lake on 31 March 1885. It reads: "Dear Mann - Messenger [that] hand you this letter is sent by me to tell some of your Indians to come here to have a talk and try and keep all quiet here. If any wish to come give them grub enough to come with to here. All quiet here and no danger. I will be down on the 2nd. Faithfully T. T. Quinn."

On the formation of the North-West Mounted Police in May 1875, Acheson Gosford Irvine (1837-1916) was appointed Assistant Commissioner and became Commissioner in November 1880. He was also in command of the police during the Northwest Rebellion of 1885.

Historical note:

Ernest Wilson Hubbell was born at Brockville, Ontario on 5 November 1862. He died on 19 February 1943 at his home in Ottawa.

Typescript of W.J. Carter's autobiographical account of his life and experiences in Western Canada during the period 1879 to 1910s. The most interesting part is Carter's account of the impact of the Northwest Resistance of 1885 on the Prince Albert community. Carter, a carpenter by trade, was hired by William McKenzie in August 1889 to build stations on the railway between Regina and Prince Albert.
