This is an overview of Discussion Paper No. 7, "Housing Our Past; Creating Our Future." by Sheila Watt-Cloutier on the problems of remote and northern communities with regard to reforms considered in Aboriginal education in other regions. The overview is presented by Josepi Padlayat.

File contains a presentation by Charlotte Wolfrey, Rigolet Housing and Toby Andersen, Chairman of the Torngat Regional Housing Association. Wolfrey gives an overview of the housing situation in Labrador, and Andersen discusses the rural native housing program for Inuit and rural residents in the province. Commissioners Dussault and Robinson contribute some questions on housing in the area.

File contains a presentation by Kevin McCormick, representative, Inuik Fisheries, and a resident of Pangnirtung. He feels that the Canadian government should be dealing with important economic and social issues in the Baffin region and that negotiations relating to the formation of Nunavut should not take precedent over these issues. He calls for the Canadian government to subsidize airfares and hotel costs in the Eastern Arctic to create growth in the tourist industry.

File contains a presentation by Tony Sinclair, Student, Anicinabe School. Sinclair, who is Junior Chief of Anicinabe School highlights a variety of concerns including: a lack of recreation and related facilities for youth, the need for daycare, the need for improved road infrastructure, the need for running water, and a request that the school board cut funding for band students who go to school off reserve and invest that funding in the community's school instead.

This is a Round Table Session on issues surrounding education reforms in northern and remote communities. Participants in the session are Elder Noel Knockwood, Don Couch, Dan Daniels, Simeonie Nalukturuk, Tim McNeil, Denise Kurszewski, Jose Kusugak, Jean-Paul Oliver, Ernie Lawton, Lena Metuq and Simona Arnatiaq-Barnes. Comments from the floor were made by Rose-Alma McDonald-Jacobs, Bob Turner and Gilbert Whiteduck.

Contains health worker reflections on the program which is designed to provide appropriate cultural experiences in South Australia.

Program expected that individuals would provide labour required to erect their own houses and examined the use of simplified housing "kits" which met design requirements and budget limitations. This company's consultant produced house plan, detailed construction manual, associated shop drawings, and summary report which included cost data.

Overview of the program, the homeowners and communities involved, the houses, their construction process and cost. Reprint of 1991 edition.

Updates information from Nature of Nursing Practice in Rural and Remote Canada: An Analysis of Policy Documents published in 2003. Search involved grey literature and government documents from Canada, United States, Australia and New Zealand and generated 29 results. Five thematic areas were found: advanced practice; nursing practice issues; educational preparation of registered nurses; physician supply; and health care delivery.

Looks at strategies to connect rural and remote nurses across Canada and generate conversations about what is unique and different about their nursing practices.

Looks at the issue in terms of environmental and food justice. Sixteen participants from Grand Rapids and the Misipawistik Cree Nation were interviewed about food needs and priorities, how they had changed over time, and what actions they felt would address needs.
