Story of the collaboration between the Aboriginal Learning Knowledge Centre and the Adult Learning Knowledge Centre to bring together a roundtable meeting with more than 50 experts who would share stories of transformation, hope, and success.

Undertaken to determine which programs were being accessed and the wants and needs of learners. Twenty-seven citizens and 16 service providers completed surveys, with an additional 27 people participating in key informant interviews and community consultations.

Objectives for project were: to research and identify effective practices for online learning, assess barriers, interest, and needs of educators with respect to online learning, and develop a plan for future directions based on these findings.

Participants Jane Jackson and Helen Mills discuss post-secondary education concerns (including literacy, upgrading, poverty, and employment issues) with Commissioners Sillett and Wilson. Following the Round Table discussion is a closing prayer which concludes the day's sitting of the Royal Commission.

File contains an individual presentation by Suzanne McCarthy, consultant on language and literacy issues for the Anglican Diocese of Moosonee, Ontario. Her focus is on Cree Syllabics that "deeply reflects Cree values, culture and social patterns. She calls on the Commission to ensure that Cree Syllabics are a protected aspect of Canadian culture. A question-and-answer session with the Commissioners follows the presentation.

File contains a presentation by Chief Victor Muse of the St. George's Indian Band Council. Muse discusses the band's history, then goes on to list a variety of concerns. These include: unemployment, illiteracy, the need for education, better social services, revitalization of the Micmac language and culture, infrastructure, self-determination, self-government, and the goal of living in harmony "with Canada and its many people." Following the presentation is a discussion between Muse and Commissioner Erasmus on some of the issues raised.

File contains a presentation by Dorothy King discussing the role of libraries in promoting cultural awareness between groups in furthering and enhancing education generally for Labradorians. She calls on the Commission to help stop annual cutbacks in funding which affect the service hours of libraries and the ability to send books to the more remote areas of Labrador. Following the discussion is a question-and-answer session with the Commissioners.

File contains a presentation by Harvey Thunderchild relating to high rates of illiteracy among Aboriginal inmates, and the high proportion of incarcerated Aboriginal people for crimes committed involving drugs and alcohol. He states that Aboriginal inmates are prevented from entering treatment programs due to a shortage of programs. He also expressed concern with Aboriginal young offenders lacking appropriate programs as well. He introduces Alfreda Trudeau.

File contains a presentation by J. Spencer Rowe. Rowe makes an individual presentation on cultural issues. Rowe discusses the importance of Aboriginal language education, and how he views spirituality as the path forward for Aboriginal peoples but that this root is difficult as they have become seperated from their lands.

File contains a presentation by the Gabriel Dumont Institute Research and Development Team relating to their proposed research project entitled "Metis Family Literacy and Youth Education Strategy." The project aims to develop recommendations for action in the areas of policy, programs and strategies for K-12 students to meet the literacy needs of the Metis and non-status Indian people in Canada. Following the presentation is a question-and-answer session with the Commissioners.

File contains a presentation by Kathy Sauve relating to Aboriginal literacy and its importance. She states that Aboriginal literacy programs "must continue in order for the survival of our younger generations and the generations yet to come." She feels that when "Aboriginal leaders speak of self-government, literacy is a very important stepping stone to it." Following the presentation is a question-and-answer session with the Commissioners.

This file contains a presentation by Lex Ross and Billy McReady that states: "Aboriginals without basic literacy and academic skills will never secure and retain gainful employment." A new curriculum should be implemented that would enhance the self-image of young Aboriginals as to their culture and history. Amulet Consulting's teaching technology "doesn't replace existing teaching systems, it enhances them" with that new curricula. A question-and-answer session with the Commissioners follows the presentation.

Historical note:

This file contains a presentation by Linda Pinch focusing on the Westman WomenÂ’s Shelter in Brandon. The shelter provides safe and temporary accommodation to women and their children who have been physically, emotionally or sexually abused. Pinch also discusses the YWCA Residence Program, a halfway house facility serving people on federal and provincial people, and those needing post-mental health and post-addiction treatment.

File contains an individual presentation by Neil Thompson. Thompson presents a pre-prepared statement on behalf of the Daily Press in Timmins, Ontario by John Farrington. Farrington addresses the Commission about the publications they create for Aboriginal communities, and youth literacy programs they run. Following the presentation Thompson discusses these programs with Commissioner Georges Erasmus.

File contains a presentation by Renee K. Abram, Coordinator of the Ontario Literacy Coalition. Abram discusses the history of her organization and "the healing that is taking place in the communities at this time in the form of Native literacy programs." Following the presentation is a discussion between Abram and Commissioners Dussault, Wilson, and Blakeney on literacy issues.

File contains a presentation by Tim McNeill. McNeill discusses issues related to education. McNeil's presentation covers secondary education, housing for students, language issues, teacher training, literacy concerns, and cultural concerns. Following the presentations Commissioners Dussault and Sillet discuss these findings.

Discusses the Seven Grandfathers' Teachings of the Ojibway and how it was incorporated into the M'Chigeeng Literacy and Basic Skills full-time program at M'Chigeeng First Nations of Manitoulin Island, Ontario.

Findings show candidates at Maori-medium schools were more likely to gain a typical level or higher NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) qualification than their Maori peers at English-medium schools.
