Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples: Presentation by Athelstan Burrows, Commissioner, Chateauguay Valley Protestant School Board and David Daoust, Executive Director, Quebec Association of Protestant School Boards

This file contains a presentation by Athelstan Burrows, also a member of the Board of Directors, Quebec Association of Protestant School Boards, and David Daoust that focuses on educational issues relating to Aboriginal peoples in Canada. The presenters believe that "the preservation of Aboriginal language, cultures, identities, institutions and traditions is inextricably bound to the preservation and promotion of an authentic and indigenous Aboriginal system of education that will finally correspond to and ensure that the hopes and aspirations of Canada's Aboriginal Peoples to become a reality." The group offers several recommendations to the Commission relating to education governance and services; existing agreements that allow for more Aboriginal input; and that school boards review their relationship with band councils and their doors to co-operation to assist in Aboriginal self-government of their own educational system. A question-and-answer session with the Commissioners follows the presentation.
