Historical note:

Fort Carlton was a Hudson's Bay Company fur trade post from 1810 until 1885. As a Company post it primarily dealt in provisions, namely pemmican and buffalo robes although other furs were traded as well.

Historical note:

Fort Pelly was located at the Indian Elbow of the Assiniboine River located eight miles south-west of the site of the present village of Pelly. Fort Pelly was built in 1824 by the Hudson's Bay Company. The high palisade fence that surrounded the Fort in 1872 has been replaced by a plank fence in this photo.

A photograph of the site of Fort Pitt taken in 1947. It was the Hudson Bay trading post on the North Saskatchewan River between Battleford and Edmonton that was looted and burned by Plains Cree warriors during the 1885 resistance. The depression next to the river on the right is where the NWMP were allowed to leave the Fort on a scow and float downriver to Battleford.

The town of Fort Qu'Appelle, SK, is located in the Qu'Appelle Valley 70 km NE of Regina between Echo and Mission Lakes. Fort Qu'Appelle was the crossroads of a number of historic trails that traversed the North-West Territories. The Hudson's Bay Company built a post at Fort Qu'Appelle in 1864.

This book is a handwritten copy of a journal kept by W.F. Wentzell while he was stationed at Grand Marais on the Peace River in the North West Company's Athabasca Department. In the journal, he refers to 'Forsyth's Potties', XY Company traders, the English Chief and other individual Indians; to the Beaver Indians, Cree and Montagnais. This journal offers a description of the interactions between traders and Natives, including the use of rum as a trading agent.
