One bound copy of the diary maintained by Mackinlay May 7- August 23, 1890 during a summer journey northward from near Taltheilei on the east end of Great Slave Lake in the company of Wharburton Pike. Pike used the diary freely in his narrative of the journey called The Barren Grounds of Northern Canada. Mention of "Indians" in various situations and circumstances from trading and guiding to getting equipment made or repaired. Frequent mention of caribou and other animals killed and fish caught.

Policies and practices looking at disaster resilience for the north will need to focus on adaptation and a whole community approach to manage risk.

Contends that infrastructure is needed for successful economic development in energy, telecommunications, and transportation.

Consists of an interview with non-Indian employed at the Gabriel Dumont Institute in Regina. At the time of the interview he was writing a book on the history of the Metis nation.

Study of artifacts showed inconsistent usage patterns and some unique design elements.

Various historical notes on the Carlton Trail composed by Dr. Ralph Russell. Includes discussion of the trail itself, posts along it, and prominent persons connected with it (such as John Palliser and Gabriel Dumont).

A set of historical and bibliographical notes compiled by Dr. Russell on water transportation in what is today the prairie provinces. Includes information on the Northcote of 1885 Resistance fame. Also discusses the employment of Metis and First Nations men on riverboats, and gives prices at Gabriel's Crossing (Gabriel Dumont's ferry operation).

Describes an early canoe that was possibly constructed before 1900 A.D.

This file contains information relating to the dugout canoe located in the Prince Albert Historical Society Museum, Prince Albert, SK. Notes describing the construction are attributed to Dan Ellison Jr. and an unknown person. Also included are notes relating to Big Bear’s Winchester rifle, made in 1880 and donated to the Museum in 1933 by Fred McFadden.

The last two images showing two different angles of the dugout canoe that is on display at the Prince Albert Historical Society Museum. The first of the three images is the informational sign.

This chapter of Reginald Beatty's diary describes how Beatty and a small crew taking a small group of people from Cumberland House to Grand Rapids and the difficulties encountered, including stormy river travel and the scourge of mosquitoes. Item found within folder 'Reginald Bird Beatty Papers.'

Historical note:

Book review of: Eastern Arctic Kayaks by John D. Heath and Eugene Arima.

Argues that the "optimum period" for the Cree of James Bay was when limited contact kept their way of life intact and that this period ended in 1914 when the area become less isolated because of the railway and other economic interests.
