Secret negotiations between the two companies commenced with George Moffat of Montreal, representing the Northwester Wintering Partners, approaching Lady Selkirk through her friend Samuel Gale, Jr., to ascertain whether or not the Hudson's Bay Company would become the Northwester's agent, supplying their outfits and selling their furs.
