Chapter IX from "The Story of Saskatchewan and its People." The chapter is broken into the following subsections: "About the Indian"; "Old Indian Policy", "Educating the Indian"; "Work of the Department" ; "The Noble Red Man"; "The Indian Character"; "Is the Indian Cruel?"; "An Indian Boy's Work"; "Indian Hospitality". Six images accompany the text.
Chapter V from "The Story of Saskatchewan and its People." The first part of the chapter discusses the Lieut. Governor Laird council's investigation into the "food supply of the Indian". This resulted in "An Ordinance for the Protection of the Buffalo" of which 11 parts are published therein. The section sub-section is entitled "Buffalo Slaughter by Indians" and is largely Professor Hind's account of his time with the Sandy Hills Cree in 1858. He describes the buffalo pounds he saw and gives his opinions on the overall practice.
Chapter XII from "The Story of Saskatchewan and its People." The chapter is entitled "Graphic Descriptions of the 'Medicine Lodge' or 'The Place of Sacred Feasting' -- The Great Blackfoot Ceremony". The author details his knowledge of the ceremony by way of anecdotal reminiscences.
Volume 1, Chapter XII from "The Story of Saskatchewan and its People." The chapter is entitled "In the Beginning: A Legend of the Blackfeet". The chapter is broken into several versions of Blackfoot legends as interpreted by Hawkes. The subsections are entitled: "Six Se-Ka-Quon: Another Legend of the Blackfeet Nation", "The 'Sou-Ke-Tap-Pi'", "The Legend of the Big Stone" and "Incident at 'Big Bear's' Trail for High Treason".
Chapter XII from "The Story of Saskatchewan and its People." This is a account of the killings of Assiniboine by White traders representing American companies from Fort Benton. Hawkes goes discusses his opinions, with some historical context, under the heading "Indian Fights in Saskatchewan". The chapter includes a section entitled "Six Hundred Blackfeet Killed in 1866" which recalls the conflict between the Blackfoot and Cree at Red Ochre Hills.
Chapter XII from "The Story of Saskatchewan and its People." The chapter is entitled "The Tragedy of 'Almighty Voice'" and descibes Hawkes' version of the incident between ALmighty Voice and Colebrooke in October, 1895. The last section of the chapter entitled "Inside Light on Tragedy" provides further information, via a statement made by Almighty Voice's father Sounding Sky.
Chapter XII from "The Story of Saskatchewan and its People." The chapter is entitled "An Indian Murder Case". This first section describes, via Peter Hourie account, a murder near the Mission at Lebret. The next section, entitled "Star Blanket", concern's Star Blanket's actions during the 1885 Resistance. The final section, "Star Blanket's Statement" is his account of his involvement in the Resistance taken by Hawkes during an interview at Joseph La Roque's house.
