A canoe on a stream (see also S-B577). Taken during the journey of Christina Bateman and Annie McKay from Prince Albert to La Ronge, SK in 1919.

Charcoal (Si'-okskitsis) was renowned for his strength and cunning as a warrior. He killed his wife's lover, fired at an Indian agent and a NWMP, and later killed a NWMP sergeant and was executed in 1897.Historical note:
The Blackfoot chief Crowfoot was born ca. 1830 near Belly River, AB, and died near Blackfoot Crossing, AB on 25 Apr 1890. Born a Blood, he grew up among the Blackfoot. As a teenager, he showed great bravery in a battle by advancing and striking a painted tipi in the hostile Crow camp.
