A photograph of an Aboriginal (Cree) man wearing a military style outfit and holding a rifle. He wears a gun belt with ammunition and a revolver on his right hip. The gun belt and revolver are probably George Mann Jr's property, and it is likely that he staged this photograph. A gun belt and revolver are artifacts held by a direct descendant of Mann Jr. Picture was possibly taken on Onion Lake or Saddle Lake reserve between 1900 and 1930. Mann was known to visit these areas well into the 1920s.

Grave marker of Rev. John Richard Matheson (1848-1916), Missionary in charge of the St. Barnabas Anglican Mission at Onion Lake. He was also the husband of Elizabeth Beckett Matheson, a doctor who served the Onion Lake district. Also listed on the marker are Edith and Baby Jack, children of the Mathesons.

George Mann Jr. Family on Picnic

The family used to take holiday trips to the north near Onion Lake where Mann Jr. grew up. It is possible he used these outings to visit a daughter (Mabel Trottier) he fathered in Onion Lake in 1898.

Indian Agency Onion Lake

Historical note:

George Gwynne Mann was born in Darlington, Upper Canada on November 24, 1843. He spent most of his youth and young adult life in Bowmanville, Ontario where he tended his father's farm. In the mid to late 1860s he was a member of the 45th West Durham Battalion of Infantry and saw action in the Fenian raids.

Historical note:

Rev. John Richard Matheson was the husband of Dr. Elizabeth (Scott) Matheson. They were married in 1891, and she went with him to the Anglican mission on a reserve at Onion Lake, 200 miles Northwest of Saskatoon. As well as a missionary, he served as builder, rancher and trader to finance their work. After she completed medical studies at his urging, he built her a small mission hospital at Onion Lake, and the couple ran a mission school there.
