A typed transcription of a newspaper article (source unknown) of the biography of P.G. Laurie, publisher of the Saskatchewan Herald newspaper. Item found within folder 1 of file Rebellion, 1885.

Historical note:

Patrick Gammie Laurie (b. 1833 - d. 1903) arrived in Fort Garry, MB in 1869 and took charge of the "Nor'Wester" newspaper, which reported on the Red River Resistance. In 1878 he left for Battleford, SK where he established the Herald. He remained there until his death in 1903. During the Rebellion of 1885 he alternated between military duties and the publication of his paper.

This file contains two issues of the "Riel Project Bulletin." It updates the activities of the Riel Project, an project established by the Universities of Alberta, Calgary, and Sherbrooke, which sought to publish a critical, bilingual edition of the collected writings of Louis Riel to mark the 100th anniversary of his death. A five-volume edition was published by the University of Alberta Press in 1985.

The Riel's Diary article from 27 April 1971 states that Saskatchewan Ross Thatcher's Liberal government wasn't interested in the $26,500 purchase price of Riel's purported diary; article from the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. The second article celebrates the 103th birthday of Solomon Pritchard of Cando, SK, who was an eyewitness of the Frog Lake massacre in 1885; newspaper unknown.
