File contains a presentation by Anne Rochon Ford, Vicki Ann Wagner, Interim Regulatory Council on Midwifery. The two presenters discuss their organization (funded by the province of Ontario), their work with Aboriginal peoples, jurisdictional issues, the loss of the traditional Aboriginal midwife in Aboriginal society, the desire to incorporate new practices with old, and related issues. They also discuss community birthing centres so that midwifes could be both trained and utilized in a culturally appropriate setting.

This file contains a presentation by Linda Pinch focusing on the Westman WomenÂ’s Shelter in Brandon. The shelter provides safe and temporary accommodation to women and their children who have been physically, emotionally or sexually abused. Pinch also discusses the YWCA Residence Program, a halfway house facility serving people on federal and provincial people, and those needing post-mental health and post-addiction treatment.

Outlines a strategy for urban Aboriginal women to develop a resource that can influence their participation within health and social systems.

Looks at results from participatory interviews of Aboriginal women at the Minwaashin Lodge about their health decision making experiences. Results were arranged in a Medicine Wheel framework for presentation and grouped in four themes.

Authors completed a literature review—including the field notes of health researchers—to determine which model of engagement, Sharing Circles or Focus Groups, was more appropriate in Indigenous communities. Research suggests that given the focus on ceremony, relationship building and respect Sharing Circles are more appropriate for Indigenous communities.

Women's Studies Thesis (Ph.D.)--York University, 1999.

Examines the Yurok women's traditional spiritual beliefs and rituals, including scratching sticks.

Four major themes emerged from study using semi-structured interviews: ways of communicating, relationships, support and assistance, and challenges of the system.

Findings suggest that clients health and social problems have increased over the years of operation while indicators of infant health have either improved or maintained steady rates.

Study found that participation rates and health data demonstrated program success and women who had better access to health care enjoyed a better overall quality of life.
