Historical note:
Ruth Cuthand was born in Prince Albert, SK in 1954 and grew up near the Blood Reserve in Alberta. Her heritage is Plains Cree and Scots/Irish. Her Aboriginal culture and memories of her childhood experiences are often the inspiration for her art-making practice.Designed to provide a basic understanding of Indigenous histories, protocols and etiquette, urban reserves, the importance of Elders and traditional practices.

Primary source for titles was Amazon Best Sellers in Children’s Native Canadian Story Books, as well as publishers' web pages, and library and authors' lists. Objective was to identify fiction books for ages 0-18 written by Indigenous authors that contained reconciliation-related themes. More than 150 books met the inclusion criteria.
Dakota games included: Kaƞsu kutepi (They shoot the plum seed); Tasiha uƞpi (Foot bone game); Hokṡina itazipe 9Young boy’s archery); Tahuka caƞhdeṡka (Hoop and arrow); Caƞkawacipina (Spinning tops and whip); and Takapsicapi (Lacrosse).
Lakota games included: Icaslohe econpi (Game of bowls); Inyan onyeyapi (A rock sling); Ipahotonpi (Popgun; Napsiyohli (Small Finger Ring); Tateka yumunpi (Wind Buzzer); and Tate kahwogyapi (Wind Chaser – They are chasing the wind).
