Study uses five open-ended focus group discussions to examine the issue of suicide in Sámi communities; participants identified 6 themes relating suicide in Sámi communities: “Sámi are treated negatively by the majority society”, “Some Sámi face negative treatment from other Sámi”, “The historic losses of the Sámi have turned into a void”, “Sámi are not provided with equal mental health care” , “The strong Sámi networks have both positive and negative impacts” and “‘Birgetkultuvvra’ might be a problem.”
Highlights contemporary challenges facing Indigenous peoples including American Indians and Alaskan Natives.

Reports on Phase I and II of the project. Five overarching themes emerged: infrastructure and leadership; addressing trauma, colonization, and settler colonialism; knowledge translation and mobilization; addressing systemic oppression and structural issues of poverty and homelessness; and institutional supports. Consultations took place in communities throughout Saskatchewan.
This file contains a presentation by John MIller, Jeannette Assinewai, Marjorie Mishihinijima and Sarah Bondy whose organizations works in the best interests of disabled Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal persons. Both groups deal with "discriminating legislation and policies which limit access to support offered to Aboriginal communities with developmental handicaps." Also discussed are findings from a Round Table on Aboriginal persons with disabilities held in early 1993. A question-and-answer session with the Commissioners follows the presentation.
