Historical note:
On 2 May 1885 Lieutenant Colonel William Otter was defeated by Poundmaker's war chief Fine-Day at the Battle of Cut Knife near Battleford, SK. A flying column of Canadian militia and army regulars was defeated by Poundmaker despite their use of a Gatling gun.Brooks moved from eastern Canada to what is now Indian Head in the spring of 1882; went into partnership in with George P. Murray to form Murray and Brooks, General Merchants, 1883. In 1885 he sat on the jury that found Louis Riel Guilty of High Treason. Letters contain some commentary on local Indigenous peoples, events and settler-Indigenous and government-Indigenous relations. Entire issue on one pdf file, scroll to page 104
