Discusses: history of the schools, consequences of removal for individuals and their families, impact of child placement services and welfare programs, and potential remedies.
Recommendations fall within nine areas identified in original report: co-operation between Manitoba Family Services and First Nations and Metis Child and Family Services authorities, devolution, funding, education and training of child welfare workers, supporting the transition to adulthood, children’s advocate, prevention based on children’s rights, building community capacity, and early childhood intervention.
Consists of an interview where he tells of life in a foster home and cultural suppression; gives a description of suppression on reserves in the 1950's; and gives a description of native values and philosophy and the role of sweat lodges.
Elders present songs and prayers with discussion about the loss of traditions and values, evils of alcohol, role of elders, etc. Also stories of adventures in intertribal warfare ; a story of a man who married a thunderwoman.
