Historical note:
The building was formerly Government House. Taken over as the Indian Residential School in 1883, and remained that until 1914. First principal was Thomas Clarke. The building was given heritage designation in 1984.Discusses how legislation such as the Indian Act, with its arbitrary rules about who is considered to be an "Indian", has impacted relationships and identity in Aboriginal communities. Chapter seven from Moving Forward, Making a Difference, vol. 3, which is also vol. 5 in the Aboriginal Policy Research series. Originally presented at the second annual Aboriginal Policy Research Conference, 2006.
