Authors note the large percentage of people experiencing homelessness who are also Indigenous and reframe homelessness as a result of intersectional oppressions, including colonial policies and impacts. Article outlines an anti-oppressive and culturally relevant framework for working with Indigenous people experiencing homelessness.

Study works with 47 Indigenous clients of the De dwa da dehs nye>s Aboriginal Health Centre (DAHC) in Ontario who are at risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Each client received three educational sessions delivered by an Indigenous nurse, the clients’ health literacy was assessed prior to and following the education session and found to be greatly improved by their attendance.

Study conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with 25 client and 6 staff participants. Ten themes emerged: culture and identity, traditional health beliefs, family, health messaging from others, healthcare experience, access to quality care, patient engagement, self-care, communication with health care practitioners, personal agency and responsibility, and client management of medications.
