Case studies provide an overview of how aboriginal communities have come to terms with mining and mineral exploration in their territories. They are: Innu Nation and Inco's Voisey's Bay Nickel Mine/Mill; Lutsel K'e Dene First Nation and BHP Diamonds Inc.; Tahltan First Nation, the mining industry, and environmental assessment; Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation and B.Y.G. Mt. Nansen Gold Mine; Makivik Corporation and Falconbridge's Raglan Mine; and Nishnawbi-Aski Nation and Ontario's living legacy.

Presents case studies of research projects in Lutsel K’e, NWT, Nain, Labrador, the Weenusk Cree Nation, Ontario, Lake Helen First Nation, Ontario and Aboriginal communities along the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.

Purpose of study was to: describe extent and nature of violence/abuse, identify socio-economic issues associated with it, describe how it is identified and dealt within each community, assess available services from client's perspective, and make recommendations for providing more appropriate responses in the future.

Case study undertaken in response to requests by South American Indigenous organizations.

Presents a study developed in collaboration with the Dene community of Lutsel K'e to develop their own framework and indicators for monitoring the health and well-being of their community.

Study conducted interviews with Dene Elders and hunters in order to document past and present migration patterns and reasons for changes in those patterns.

Minister of the Environment and Parks Canada, Rona Ambrose, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Chief Adeline Jonasson to advance work on an area of interest totalling 33,525 sq. km.. See article # 74.

The file contains a presentation by Archie Catholique, Joe Boucher, and Ellen Bielawski of the Lutsel'Ke Dene Band. Catholique discusses concerns with a nearby hydro dam, flooding, and the loss of two experienced Elders through the ice due to it. Boucher, an Elder who speaks via a translator, discusses the impact of flooding at Nonacho Lake on gravesites, animal populations, and Dene life in general. Follwoing the presentation Commissioner Georges Erasmus makes some comments on the contents.
