Mathias Colomb

Project began with visits in the communities of Fisher River First Nation in Koostatak and Mathias Colomb First Nation (Pukatawagan) and later expanded to ten other sites across Canada in a variety of settings (urban, remote, on-reserve, and off-reserve). The study was mainly conducted through interviews with directors, staff and clients of women's shelters.

File contains a presentation by Chief Pascal Bighetty and Darryl Linkletter, Junior Chief, representing the Missinipi people of the Churchill River area. Bighetty describes systems of indigenous self-government in other countries and the limits put on band councils by the Canadian government. He states that if South Africa can "invite the First Nations of Africa to sit side by side in the Parliament," then Canada should have Aboriginal Members of Parliament in the near future. Following the presentation is a discussion with the Commissioners.

The file contains a presentation by Peter Sinclair, Mathias Colomb Cree Nation. Sinclair discusses "our day to day nightmare with the ongoing obstruction and interference by Government Bureaucracies." Sinclair relates some of the Cree Nation's history with regard to resource exploitation, residential schools, land use, racism, the negative impact of hydro-electric development, and related concerns. Following the presentation Commissioner Wilson discusses some of the issues raised with Sinclair after which the Commission's sitting is concluded for the day.

Results of examination of practices of four Manitoba First Nations. Unedited.

Researchers used interviews and focus groups to collect data from 23 participants on the use of the PAX Good Behaviour Game in Swampy Cree Tribal Council (SCTC) communities. Findings indicate positive outcomes for children, but also highlight difficulties in implementation and the need for community consultation.
