Book review of: The Burden of History by Elizabeth Furniss.

Describes how First Nations leaders utilize colonial stereotyping to transform the cultural performance of the rodeo into a vehicle of political power.

The file contains a presentation by Chief Agnes Snow focusing on residential schools and government policy. Snow states that because the federal government wanted to assimilate Aboriginal peoples, they have lost their languages, traditions and values. Family violence, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, unemployment and poor physical and mental health are problematic on her First Nation, and she calls on the Commission to ensure that her First Nation continues to receive government funding to combat these social problems. A question-and-answer session with the Commissioners follows the presentation.

The file contains a presentation on behalf of Secwepemc re Resource Management. Fred Fortier and David Moore, both of the Shuswap Nation Fisheries Commission, discuss declining salmon and steelhead populations, mismanagement of fish stocks, the B.C. Fishermen's Survival Coalition's "racially-oriented campaign against the Aboriginal Fisheries Strategy," and recommendations to deal with these problems. Chief Lenny Sellars, Caribou Tribal Council, discusses enviornmental protection, land stewardship, and co-management.

Historical background and submission to the Indian Claims Commission (ICC) regarding what lands the Bands occupied around Missioner Creek and Williams Lake in 1861 and if Canada had an obligation to protect the settlement. ICC held that the village sites should have been set aside for the Band and that Canada should accept the claim.
