Description
Personal narrative of the daughter of Chief Trader W.J. McLean of the Hudson's Bay Company about her family's capture at Fort Pitt and subsequent transfer to Wandering Spirit's camp at Frog Lake during the conflict. The interpreter for Big Bear at his trial gives translation of the Cree leader's speech and recounts his own memories of the Frog Lake Massacre.

Included in diary pocket is a requisition for short boots that was signed by Wadmore on May 1885, lyrics of the Infantry School Corps fight song, and a Victoria Daily Times article from 23 June 1944 about the remaining members of the Northwest Field Force and their experiences.

A photograph of the site of Fort Pitt taken in 1947. It was the Hudson Bay trading post on the North Saskatchewan River between Battleford and Edmonton that was looted and burned by Plains Cree warriors during the 1885 resistance. The depression next to the river on the right is where the NWMP were allowed to leave the Fort on a scow and float downriver to Battleford.

A brochure produced by the Saskatchewan Diamond Jubilee and Canada Centennial Co. in 1965 that outlines the battle of Steele Narrows, the last battle of the 1885 North West resistance. Steele Narrows was developed as a Provincial Historic site that same year. There is also photocopy of another history of Steele Narrows produced by the Saskatchewan Department of Natural Resources Conservation and Information Branch.

Cameron and Campbell Innes during which the party retraced the route taken by Big Bear's band after the Frog Lake Massacre during the Rebellion of 1885. The story appeared in the Star-Phoenix 23 Oct 1947. (See photographs nos. PH 87 100 to PH 87 109 and PH 87 127 to PH 87 135 which accompanied this article when it was donated)
