Presents the history of the relationship between Europeans and Aboriginal peoples in 19th century Manitoba.

Details the author’s process of reflexivity in their integration of Métis/Michif or Otipemisiwak cultural practices into their studies and praxis as a graduate student, and into their clinical practice as an Occupational Therapist.

Study uses oral interviews to engage Métis understandings of Marian apparitions and shrines in and surrounding Sakitawak (Île-à-la-Crosse); authors work to discuss Métis spirituality in a way that makes sense to community members and that also challenges outsiders presumptions about the relationship between the Métis and Mary. Article describes the refinement and implementation of a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) in Dene/Métis Communities to assess what traditionally harvested foods are being consumed and what the potential is for exposure to environmental contaminants as a result.

Discusses greater emphasis that is currently placed on social history of Métis communities and concludes that further investigations should consider the importance of class as well as comparisons of relevant experience of parallel peoples in other lands.

The grave of Francois-Xavier "Batoche" Letendre who died in 1901 of consumption. He was a successful businessman and the founder of Batoche, Saskatchewan.
