Database search of literature published between September 1978 and May 2015 produced 62 appropriate studies. Interdependence was evident between all of the eight characteristics: accessible health services, community participation, continuous quality improvement, culturally appropriate and skilled workforce, flexible approach to care, holistic health care, and self-determination and empowerment.

Introduction to the Cherokee Choices Program, a culturally appropriate community action plan, used to prevent type 2 diabetes in a rural community in North Carolina.

Author draws on historical manuscripts and ethnological studies of Cherokee spiritual and wellness practices; works to articulate the interaction between the healer, the patient, and the framework of cultural and spiritual beliefs around wellness and healing.

Based on 10 telephone interviews with government and non-government frontline workers and literature review. Identifies challenges (communication within division or department, role clarity, confidentiality, support for "non-acute" children, need for support and relief, and lack of continuity) and best practices (early intervention, holistic service, interagency information sharing, empowerment and skill-development for patients and families, culturally safe practice, professional development, and clinical supervision).

Information manual topics include: First Nations child rearing practices, developmental milestones and stages of life, healthy child development issues, strategies to promote healthy child development, how parents can be positive role models and more.

Clinical Psychology Thesis (Ph.D.)--Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2001.

Surveyed 187 women. Key issues included high rates of stressful life events during pregnancy, low levels of choice in place of birth and model of care, and limited options to carry out cultural practices. High levels of confidence in ability to parent were also reported.
