| Description: | File contains multiple presentations on the topic of the environment. The first presentation is by Chief Rod Bushie (pg 91) who states that his council has dealt with environmental issues which are a concern on both water and land, and with reference to the federal government "again, as usual, they have put us on hold and nothing has been happening." Next is a presentation by Chief Jerry Fontaine (pgs 92-95) who responds to earlier presenter Chuck Koppang's presentation on gaming, then discusses Sagkeeng First Nations work with environmental clean-ups, water infrastructure, pulp and paper mill pollution, and associated concerns. Next is George Munroe (pgs 95-100) who discusses the Abitibi Pulp Mills damage to river water, hunting and trapping areas. Munroe also states that institutions like the pulp mills must be held responsible for the damage they do to communities, the same as governments must be held responsible. Next is Glen Pinnell, representative of Abitibi-Price pulp company (pgs 100-103) who responds to environmental concerns and discusses their actions. Next is a statement by Chief Jerry Fontaine in response on the Abitibi-Price company (pgs 103-105). Next is a statement by Elder Courchene on resource equity (pgs 105-106). Next is a discussion between Moderator Courchene, Commissioners Chartrand, Sillet, and Chief Fontaine on the issues raised (pgs 106-110), followed by a presentation by Elder Jack Star who discusses the impact of water pollution on the community (110-114). Next is a presentation by Warren Bird, of Little Black River (pgs 114-116) briefly discussing self-government, the justice system and culture. |
