Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples: Recommendations by Nelson Mayer, Vice-President, United Native Nations

This file contains recommendations by Nelson Mayer, Vice-President, United Native Nations. Mayer compiled four reports from the four workshop groupings from the previous day's session (7 June 1993) and labelled the reports Ownership, Governments, Community and Resources. Mayer offers numerous recommendations under each report. These include providing education that promotes self-awareness and self-esteem in cultural specific identity; women should be encouraged to run for elected positions and appointed to leadership roles; having elders teach and have involvement in school life, community groups and daycares; and providing multi-purpose facilities to accommodate battered families, children at risk, pre- and post-treatment clients. Ruth Norton, Native Women's Association of Canada, offers remarks on Mayer's recommendations.
