Highlights issues and challenges, and profiles promising practices under three themes: root causes of abuse and neglect, prevention and early intervention strategies, and supports for the child welfare workforce.

Argues that 20 years after problems were first publicized about child welfare little has changed, except for the policy that First Nations' children cannot be placed for adoption without the consent of the child's band or the First Nations' Child and Services agency.

Chapter 10 from Putting a Human Face on Child Welfare: Voices From the Prairies edited by Ivan Brown, Ferzana Chaze, Don Fuchs, Jean Lafrance, Sharon McKay and Shelley Thomas Prokop.

Examines issues and options regarding the development of culturally appropriate accreditation standards. Consists of literature review and survey of 28 organizations, of which 15 were Aboriginal agencies involved in provision of child and family services.

Explains the need for the Saskatchewan child welfare system to provide better support, financial and other, for Aboriginal Grandmothers who are caring for their grandchildren.

Explores many issues concerning Métis people of Manitoba and provides recommendations to the justice system regarding operations.

Developed to assist British Columbia's First Nations in the delivery and evaluation of child and family services. Revised edition.

Examines changes in control in child and family services in Northern Manitoba.

Examines experiences of relocation from reserve communities to urban or rural communities and the impact on health and acceptance.

Study conducted through analysis of secondary and primary interviews with Aboriginal women and healthcare providers. Found that while perceptions of racism, judgement and discrimination did not influence decisions to seek medical attention for their children, they did affect women's decisions about accessing services for themselves.

Comments on case where a non custodial parent used the Indian Child Welfare Act to halt an adoption of an Aboriginal child to non-Aboriginal parents.

Authors conducted analysis of 4300 advertisements promoting adoption of Indigenous children which were featured in the "Today's Child" column in The Toronto Telegram and The Toronto Star from 1964 to 1982, the period known as the Sixties Scoop. Descriptions of happiness were framed in ways which conformed with white society's notions of family and nation.

Summary of literature and future directions for research with comparisons to the Australian situation.

Used data from a national sample to compare Native American with White, Black, and Hispanic caregivers in their need for and receipt of treatment.

Developed with the goal of assisting non-Indigenous staff to gain cultural competency through an understanding of family and kinship systems and historical and contemporary contexts, as well as providing information on the services available for support.

Analysis of responses from 295 individuals gathered during the course of the Experiences of Adopted and Fostered Individuals Project. Results showed that Native Americans were more likely to report problems such as alcohol addiction and recovery, drug recovery, both self-assessed and diagnosed eating disorders, self-harm, and suicidal ideation.
