Tanya Talaga, prize-winning journalist and author of Seven Fallen Feathers delivers the fourth of the 2018 Massey Lectures in Saskatoon. In this lecture Talaga links the similarities between contemporary nations with a history of colonization and describes some of the effects for Indigenous peoples and communities. In this Lecture Talaga focuses specifically on healthcare and the disparity in the quality of care available to Indigenous peoples. Duration: 53:59

A scoping literature review selected 43 articles published between 2005 and 2016; findings address 4 main themes relating to compromised access to healthcare: (1) the influence of physical geography, (2) healthcare provider-related barriers, (3) the importance of culture and language and (4) the impact of systemic factors.

Study uses five open-ended focus group discussions to examine the issue of suicide in Sámi communities; participants identified 6 themes relating suicide in Sámi communities: “Sámi are treated negatively by the majority society”, “Some Sámi face negative treatment from other Sámi”, “The historic losses of the Sámi have turned into a void”, “Sámi are not provided with equal mental health care” , “The strong Sámi networks have both positive and negative impacts” and “‘Birgetkultuvvra’ might be a problem.”

Reports on challenges and proposals emerging from workshop groups at the first Nordic Conference on Indigenous Peoples and Dementia. The challenges identified in terms of provision of services in municipalities were: insufficient knowledge of rights and what they entail, lack of linguistic and cultural expertise, lack of tools for day-to-day work and development of operations, and developing collaborations between Nordic countries.

Discussion based on cases decided under the Optional Protocol to the Convent, on the Human Rights Committee's general comments and consideration of periodic report by States parties. Focuses on Article 1: the right of all peoples to self determination; and Article 27: the protection afforded under the notions of 'culture' and 'minority'.

Modern Languages for Communication and International Cooperation Thesis (M.A.)--Università degli Studi di Padova, [2018]

Looks at the Arctic holding 22 per cent of the world's undiscovered, technically recoverable, conventional oil and natural gas resources.

Looks at ineffective layers of arctic governance which includes local governments, central governments, indigenous councils and the international Arctic Council.

Looks at development of two complementary governance structures: self-rule and shared rule. The Inuit approach has involved negotiating land claims agreements and in some cases, establishing amalgamated regional governments to administer programs; the Sámi approach has involved establishment of Sámediggi national parliament.
