Sturgeon Lake First Nation

A draft proposal relating to economic difficulties experienced by residents of northern Saskatchewan. The proposals are to include both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal inhabitants and include the construction of filleting plants, longer fishing seasons and guaranteed wages for Aboriginal workers.

This file contains "Sinasia Remembers" the reminiscences of Harriet E. Gerry (unpublished), and published articles about her work nursing among the Indians of western Canada. Her extensive memoir is made up of several short stories and anecdotes about the many communities she worked in. These include Onion Lake, Kehewin Reserve, Leask, Sturgeon Lake, Cold Lake, Fort Qu'Appelle, One Arrow Reserve, Piapot Reserve and many in British Columbia later in her career.

This file contains a portion of a transcript of a sitting of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples at Regina Friendship Centre, Regina, Saskatchewan. This portion of the Commission includes presentations made by Roy Bird, Clive Diller and Del Anaquod of the Saskatchewan Indian Equality Foundation, concerning economic development, loans and banking in the Aboriginal Community. Questions from the assembled commissioners are also included.

Historical background and submission to Indian Claims Commission (ICC) regarding whether Canada breached its duties to the Band in 1982 by failing to comply with the Indian Act provisions for leasing reserve land. However, ICC may only hear claims rejected by Canada 15 or more years ago. ICC did recommend the "15-year rule" be repealed.
