Diary of Inspector Francis Dickens of the Fort Pitt NWMP from 1885; entries from 4 March 1885 - 15 April 1885. Includes a historical introduction and commentary by Vernon LaChance.

Historical note:

Francis Jeffrey Dickens, son of famed English novelist Charles Dickens, was born in London in 1844. After being educated in France and Germany, Dickens considered many careers including medicine, farming and journalism. He eventually joined the Bengal Mounted Police, and later joined Canada's North West Mounted Police. In 1885, he served as garrison commander during the Siege of Fort Pitt,SK, escaping with his men to Battleford after six days of travel on the river. He resigned his commission in 1886 and passed away within the year.
